A house fire in Elkridge Friday afternoon displaced three residents and killed a family cat, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.
Rescue crews were dispatched to the scene, in the 5600 block of Railroad Avenue, shortly after noon. There, they quickly extinguished a heavy fire in the back of the building, according to a county press release.
Firefighters then opened up walls and ceilings to find and put out any remaining fire. The fire was declared extinguished a little after 1 p.m., according to county officials.
Rescue crews from Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties assisted in the effort.
Damages to the home were extensive, according to officials, and it is expected to be posted as uninhabitable. As of Friday afternoon, officials had no damage estimate and were still working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
No firefighters or civilians were injured in the blaze. Officials said the American Red Cross is working to help the displaced family.
