When Columbia was created 50 years ago, it was known as "the city without grandparents." Now, though, the "pioneers" who first raised families there are eligible for Medicare, and the 2010 Census reported that people aged 50 and older made up nearly 15 percent of Howard County's population.
From housing to health care to clubs, the county offers a wealth of programs and services for seniors.
The county has more than 18 active adult communities designated for residents 55 and older, and more are planned. From townhouses to single-family homes to condominiums, each features a variety of design elements and maintenance options.
HOUSING In addition to the sampling below, the county has a number of assisted-living facilities and retirement and life-care communities. Call 410-313-6542 for more information about facilities with 16 or fewer beds, or 410-402-8217 for larger facilities.
