Two Columbia schools partner with financial institutions

Cradlerock Elementary School and Stevens Forest Elementary School have both partnered with financial institutions to teach students about banking and financial planning, the Howard County Public School System announced last week.

Cradlerock has partnered with Wells Fargo. Under the terms of the partnership, which is to teach student the importance of financial planning and the benefits of saving, Wells Fargo will create an in-school bank for Cradlerock students and staff. Some fifth-grade students will be trained as "tellers" and will learn how a financial institution operates. Wells Fargo will also work with staff to develop plans to teach financial math skills.

Stevens Forest has partnered with Columbia Bank. Under the terms of the partnership, which is to introduce students to economics and finance and build banking skills, Columbia Bank will create an in-school bank for Stevens Forest students. Some fourth- and fifth-grade students will be trained as "tellers" and will learn how a bank operates. Columbia Bank representatives will also provide workshops on money management, the value of money and the importance of saving for the future.
