Howard County soccer teams set to begin region playoffs

The region soccer playoffs for Howard County teams kick off Thursday evening with a pair of girls soccer games.

The rest of the first round action, for both the boys and girls, will take place on Friday. All postseason games are played on the home field of the better seed unless otherwise noted.

The county teams are split between three regions — 4A North, 3A East and 2A South.

Each of the region champions advances to the state semifinals where they will be trying to advance into a championship contest to be played between Nov. 13-15.

This fall, after a 15-year run at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, the boys and girls state soccer finals will be played at Loyola University's four-year-old Ridley Athletic Complex.

Boys soccer

Howard received the second seed in Section II of the 4A North region. The placement earned the Lions a first-round bye and that means the team will host Blake at 5 p.m. in the second round on Oct. 28. The winner of that game will advance to the sectional final game on Oct. 31.

The eight county teams in 3A East are split between Section I and Section II.

Mt. Hebron has the second seed in Section I and received a first-round bye. The Vikings will play the winner of Digital Harbor and Poly on Oct. 28. Centennial has the fourth seed and a first-round match-up against fifth-seeded Long Reach at 5 p.m. on Friday. The winner of that game will play top-seeded City on Oct. 28.

In Section II, River Hill has the top seed and a first-round bye. The Hawks will host the winner of fourth-seeded Atholton and fifth-seeded Glenelg on Oct. 28. That first-round match-up between the Raiders and Gladiators is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. at Atholton.

Reservoir is seeded second in Section II of 3A East and has a bye before squaring off against Wilde Lake, which also has a first-round bye, at 4 p.m. on Oct. 28.

In 2A South Section I, Oakland Mills is seeded second and has an opening-round bye. The Scorpions will play the winner of Patuxent and St. Charles on Oct. 28. Fourth-seeded Marriotts Ridge will actually travel to face fifth-seeded Hammond On Friday at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will travel to play top-seeded Calvert on Oct. 28.

Girls soccer

Howard has the second seed in Section II of the 4A North region, which means a first-round bye. The Lions will host third-seeded Blake at 7 p.m. on Oct. 28.

In Section I of the 3A East region, Centennial is the top seeded team from Howard County and has drawn the third seed. The Eagles will host Digital Harbor at 7 p.m. on Friday for the right to face second-seeded City on Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. In the same section, fourth-seeded Mt. Hebron hosts fifth-seeded Long Reach at 5:30 p.m. on Friday for the right to face top-seeded Poly on Oct. 28.

In 3A East Section II, River Hill has the top seed and a first-round bye. The Hawks will face the winner of fourth-seeded Reservoir and fifth-seeded Glenelg on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. That first-round match-up between the Gators and Gladiators is at 7 p.m. Thursday night at Reservoir. On the bottom half of the section, Atholton has the second seed and a first-round bye and will face Wilde Lake, which also has an opening bye, on Oct. 28 at 5:30 p.m.

In 2A South Section I, Marriotts Ridge is seeded third and has an opening-round meeting with St. Charles. The winner of that game will travel to play second-seeded Patuxent on Oct. 28. Fourth-seeded Oakland Mills hosts fifth-seeded Hammond on Thursday at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to face top-seeded Calvert on Oct. 28.

All of the sectional final games are scheduled to be played on Oct. 31, with the regional finals on tap for the following week.
