Over the last three years, River Hill had dominated on the Howard County mats.
The Hawks entered the year winners of their last 41 county duals and three-time defending county champions, but there will be a new champion this season – one that will likely be decided Wednesday night at Oakland Mills.
Glenelg will travel to face the Scorpions, and both will have their undefeated county record on the line, as well as the regular season dual championship.
The Gladiators (10-0, 20-7) have won six county duals since Jan. 24, including an 35-33 upset win over River Hill on Jan. 29, and a 35-34 win over Marriotts Ridge on Jan. 31.
The Scorpions (9-0, 18-2) haven't lost since the first weekend of December at their own tournament – the Scorpion Duals – and are fresh off winning the Overlea Invitational on Jan. 31 and a win against Century on Feb. 2.
A win for Glenelg Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. means the Gladiators would finish perfect in county play and win the county title. The Scorpions need a victory tomorrow and then get past a tough Marriotts Ridge team on Feb. 6 to win the county title.
River Hill, which also lost to Oakland Mills on Dec. 16, have won the past three regular season dual titles, while Glenelg won it in 2011.
Potential matchups include Zach Vincent of Oakland Mills and Austin Twigg of Glenelg at 220 pounds, and county-title contenders Matthew Claxton of Oakland Mills and Parker Griffie of Glenelg at 145 pounds.
Also, Mount Mat Madness finalist Jamie Cooch of Glenelg will see one of the biggest surprises in the county in Antonio Rozier of Oakland Mills in a heavyweight showdown.
