COLUMBIA, MD — Wins haven't been easy to come by for the Marriotts Ridge volleyball team this season, but the Mustangs took a step in the right direction on Thursday at Long Reach, winning a three-set sweep.
"We haven't been playing up to what we're capable of, but we are a talented team," said coach Amanda Olsen, whose team improved to 2-5 in league play with the win. "There are a lot of games left."
Marriotts Ridge was led by middle hitter Carolyn Keeney, who had three kills in the second set, Sarah Canipe, who had two aces in the second set, and Mikaila Fitzpatrick and Molly Meininger, who each had two aces in the third set.
Long Reach, which dropped to 0-6 with the loss, was hurt by the loss of libero and team leader Heather McKay in the first set. McKay made a diving attempt for a ball and hit her face against the floor, knocking out a tooth. She was immediately taken to a dentist, but could be sidelined for several matches.
"She hustles after everything," said first-year coach Frank Valenza.
The Lightning was led by setter McKenzie Langford.
