To say Oakland Mills senior Jaron Smith had a perfect season would be an understatement.
Fresh off a state title last season, Smith was the steady, dominating force that helped lead the Scorpions to their first ever state dual meet title.
Individually, Smith capped off an undefeated season in dominating fashion.
Smith (42-0) pinned his way through the 1A/2A 182-pound bracket, fished off by sticking Mountain Ridge's Austin Clark in 1 minute, 49 seconds to capture his second straight title.
"I knew I could do it, I just had to put my mind to it. And I went out there and that's what I did," Smith said. "I went out there and dictated. I knew if I dominating then it would go my way. He was a pretty strong guy, so I went in there and got the quick takedown ... I had to put a little extra on top."
Smith, whose strength is riding his opponents on top, used his legs to flatten Clark before using a power-half to put him on his back late in the first period. There was no getting up after that, and Smith notched his fourth pin of the tournament.
"I thought Jaron just stayed in his game. He stays aggressive and tries to smash his style of wrestling into someone else's throat. He was relentless in not giving an inch," said Oakland Mills coach Brad Howell. "He has a lot of passion for the sport, and obviously he has grown extensively fast. I can't wait to watch him with a couple years of college (wrestling) under his belt."
