Hammond, Howard, Atholton open girls lacrosse season with victories

Kelsey Savje and Jenny Kinsey each scored three goals as Howard notched its first regular season victory over River Hill since 1997. The final score of Monday's game was 11-5 in the Lions' favor.

"We did a great job of pressuring the ball today," said Howard coach Alleesha Davidson. "The girls played with tons of heart."

Howard changed its offensive tactics to pull away from a 5-3 halftime advantage.

"We were patient and spread out," Davidson said.

The move limited River Hill's time of possession while also allowing the Lions to run minutes off the clock.

Kendall Stull was River Hill's scoring leader with three goals.

Hammond 16, Oakland Mills 4

Hammond won its first county game since 2013 by beating Oakland Mills, 16-4. The Scorpions had on answer for Hammond's Zoe Pekins, who scored a game-high five goals. Teammate Brigid Mangan added four goals and an assist. In all six Hammond players scored.

Christina Devine and Morgan Carroll each found the net three times for Oakland Mills.

A balanced attack led by Meaghan Quinn, Rachel Foster and Emma Johnson powered Atholton past Long Reach, 20-2 in the season-opener for both teams.
