What you need to know: The Golden Bears are coming off back-to-back finishes at the bottom of the county standings and new coach Michael Salapata inherits a group that graduated the top three scorers from last year's team. But as Salapata begins his process of rebuilding the program, he's focusing solely on what he has.
"From what I've seen so far, we have a bunch of hard working guys with a lot of athleticism," said Salapata. "For those who have followed me when I was coaching at New Town or the last two years with the JV at Oakland Mills, you know my teams aren't going to walk the ball up the court. We are going to try and capitalize on some of that athleticism."
Johnson and Wilcher are two of the top returners from a season ago, as each averaged around 5 points a game and had three or more games scoring in double figures.
Salapata has a history of success, taking New Towson's varsity squad to the state championship game in 2012. He also guided the Scorpions' JV team to a 19-1 record last winter. It may take a little time, but he'll be trying to transfer some of that winning mentality over to the Golden Bears.
"I'm excited to be back on the varsity level, no question. I've had nothing but support from the school and the (AAM Michael Lerner) from the time I interviewed for the position and I'm looking forward to getting going," Salapata said.
