The Howard County tennis tournament has been underway since Tuesday at the Wilde Lake Tennis Center, and so far, the weather has been pleasant, allowing the first several rounds to go smoothly.
The tournament continues on Friday afternoon with the completion of the quarterfinals, including the entirety of the mixed doubles quarterfinal round. The championship round is scheduled to begin on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
So far, the top seeds have held serve, with defending champions Matt Sklar of Atholton and Abby Thornton of Marriotts Ridge still cruising in singles play. Things should get interesting on Friday, though, with Centennial freshman Ram Kotnana and Atholton senior Victoria Kogan — the 2013 state finalist — rolling through their side of the bracket.
River Hill's Prateek Swamykumar and Nick Zhu, who won a state championship at boys doubles last year, have partnered again and have not had any setbacks so far in their county title defense.
