County champions Atholton, Marriotts Ridge and Glenelg advance in field hockey playoffs

Freshman Tori Raulin had two goals and an assist as Atholton beat Mt. Hebron, 4-1. When the two teams played during the regular season, Atholton won in overtime.

"They are really fired up," said Atholton coach Martie Dyer about her squad. "This year's team really wants to win every game."

The Raiders' rallying cry is: One team; one dream.

And that dream is a state title.

Raulin scored both of her goals on offensive thrusts in the first half. Her first tally came as she collected a rebound off of the goalie's pads and swept the ball over the goal line.

"We definitely came out harder than last time," said Atholton senior Gina D'Asto. "When the score was 2-0 at halftime, we pretended like it was 0-0."

Ally Unkenholz cut Atholton's lead in half when she scored on a stroke 7 minutes into the second half.

The goal seemed to rejuvenate the Vikings, but Atholton remained dominant. In the second half, the Raiders were awarded 12 penalty corners; Mt. Hebron had none.

Jen Bleakney scored an insurance goal for Atholton and Faryn Katz put the game away when she scored with 2:40 left.

"They are very, very strong offensively," said Mt. Hebron goalie Chachi Kelehan (11 saves). "They have very quick reverse shots. You're not sure if they are going high or low and it is very hard to stop them. …It stinks to see the outcome because I know we can do better."

Mt. Hebron coach Jeannette Ireland was pleased with her team's effort, though.

"I thought the kids played well. They just played so hard; they didn't back down."

Ireland said that Atholton reminds her of the 2013 Mt. Hebron team that reached the state championship game. "They just don't have a weakness," she said. "Atholton's is a great team and I hope that they will represent our region at states."

In the other 3A East Section II semifinal, Westminster defeated Reservoir, 5-0. That sets up an Atholton at Westminster rematch. The game will be played at 3:30 on Monday. Westminster knocked Atholton out of last year's tournament.

Glenelg had to come from behind to beat River Hill, 2-1. All of the goals were scored in the second half.

It was the thought of their season ending that spurred the Gladiators.

After the two teams had gone back-and-forth for 30 minutes without scoring, River Hill's Caleigh Covell gave her team a 1-0 advantage early in the second half.

"We hung our heads," said Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid.

Then with 15 minutes left, River Hill called a time out that led to the Hawks' undoing.

"I told my kids that I couldn't help them and that it had to come from them," Kincaid said. "I thought it was not looking good, but they showed me what they are made of."

Her team got the message and Hannah Doughty and Leanne Duncan both scored to give Glenelg the victory.

"That's about the most equal game we've ever played," said River Hill coach Shelly Chamness. "I think everybody on my team played well; we did everything we were going to do."

River Hill will be losing 13 seniors.

"This is a really good bunch of kids," Chamness said.

Glenelg will play at Marriotts Ridge on Monday. The game time is to be determined.

Marriotts Ridge 5, Centennial 0

Five players scored as Marriotts Ridge dominated in its 5-0 victory over Centennial.

"We definitely made good connections and we scored on two of our corners. I'm very, very happy about that," said Marriotts Ridge coach Stacie Gado.

The Mustangs will host Glenelg on Monday in the sectional final.

Howard beat North County, 5-0. Zoe Summa got the scoring going when she converted a stroke. Nicole Keller had two goals and two assists.

Howard will play at Old Mill Monday.
