Clean seat
"Citizens Take To The Streets For Local Clean Up Campaign: Clean Up Our County Seat!"
"This is the theme for Saturday's communitywide clean-up campaign. Plans are to clean the area from Rogers Ave. and Frederick Rd. to the bridge and all side-streets along the way. Junk collected during the day, will then be loaded in two trucks being provided by the county and taken to the county landfill, on New Cut Road.
"Those interested in making this beautification project a success are invited to come to The Times Building (west of the Post Office on Main Street) anytime after 9:30 a.m. this Saturday. Come whenever you can and work as long as you can. Coffee and Cokes will be provide for the workers.
"The idea of this clean-up camping is the brainchild of the local lawyer and member of the Emory Methodist Church, James Vaughan. He discussed the possibilities with the young adult group in the church and the campaign has spread to include the entire community."

Saddle for Spank Me
"Doughoregan Manor Is Site of Eighteenth Annual Public Health Association Benefit; Seventy-Seven Horses Listed For Sixteen Classes — Championship Classes For Both Ponies And Horses
"Messrs. Turner Wiltshire and Clay Bailey, both of Middleburg, Virginia, and Thomas T. Mott, of Bethesda, judges for the annual Doughoregan Manor Horse Show, will be faced with a real task when more than seventy-five horses and their ponies go through their paces for them this Saturday. The two gentlemen from Virginia will judge the hunter classes and Mr. Mott will pass his opinions on the junior division entries.
"According to Charles Carroll, who is in charge of show entries, this year's list of horses, numbering seventy-seven, is not only the largest list but the best for both quality and ability. In addition, nearly all of Howard County's show horses are included in the list. More notable are Monty R. the Louis Randall mount that recently won the Maryland Hunt Cup Race; Paddy Whack and Spank Me, from the Warfield stables; Puddings and Peter Pepper, owned by Diane D. Beecher, the Howard Bruce horses, High and Mighty, Kantora and Teddy; Mrs. James Clark's Confident and the Streaker entries of Star Light, Twinkle and Lady Krem."
Well, with a Teddy, Paddy Whack, and Spank Me, etc. it sounds like a real racy race. But as with naming boats, why shouldn't those participating in expensive hobbies have fun naming their horses and/or boats, even 75 years ago.

Convict labor 'satisfactory'
"Convict Workmen Make Good Start; Short Term Prisoners Of The Maryland House of Correction Have Been Tried Out On Road From Waterloo To Jessup And The Experiment Has Proved Satisfactory. Cost To the People Of Howard County Merely Nominal
"On April 8 the Board of Directors of the Maryland House of Correction decided to experiment with the work of convict labor on the roads of Howard and adjoining counties, and pursuant to said decision on April 21, placed about 15 men on the piece of road leading from Waterloo, on the Baltimore and Washington Boulevard to Jessup station, a distance of about a mile."
"Carrolls Back From Europe; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carroll of Carrollton, After Lengthy Stay In France, Return For A Short Time. Grandson Their Chief Interest In This Country At Present. Mr. Carroll Was At the Head Of Ambulance Corps.
"Mr. Charles Carroll, of 'Carrollton', proprietor of Dougheregan Manor with Mrs. Carroll, arrived at Union Station, Baltimore, Wednesday night having come from New York where they had just returned from Paris. They were met at the station by their son, Mr. Charles Bancroft Carroll.
"Mr. and Mrs. Carroll landed in New York, having made the journey across the Atlantic on the French steamship Rochambeau. Both Mr. and Mrs. Carroll looked in perfect health and were much tanned.
" 'The Rochambeau sailed from Bordeaux, France," said Mr. Carroll. "We left the harbor with all lights extinguished, and did not have them showing on the ship until we were well at sea."
Europe was engaged in World War I at the time, hence the blackout. The United States entered the war in 1917.
