Police identify Washington, D.C., man charged in Columbia road rage shooting

A Washington, D.C., man has been arrested and charged in Monday morning's road rage incident after shooting at another driver near Howard High School in Columbia.

Leon Von Woods, 34, is facing attempted murder, assault and firearms violations, according to Howard police.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Cristie Kahler said Woods was arrested by Harford County sheriff's deputies late Monday evening in another incident following reports of an armed man standing in the middle of the road near the gate to the Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Ground on Route 152.

While Woods was detained by deputies, they saw spent shell casings in his vehicle and found a firearm on the ground near where Woods was standing, Kahler said. He was arrested without incident.

A man driving erratically Monday morning near Howard High School pulled beside another car and shot into the driver's side door, Howard County Police said.

Howard police were notified shortly after about Woods, as deputies believed he matched the suspect's description in Columbia's road rage incident.

Earlier Monday, around 6:15 a.m., a driver called Howard police to report that a dark Chrysler 300 with chrome rims had been driving erratically on westbound Route 100 to Route 108 in Columbia. The caller told police that the driver of the Chrysler pulled up next to his driver's side window, and fired once with a handgun, striking the driver's door panel. The victim was not struck.

Through investigation, Howard County police determined that Woods was the suspect in the Columbia road rage incident.

He is charged in Harford County will illegal possession of ammunition, possessing firearms with a drug charge, possessing firearms with a felony conviction, knowingly altering a firearm ID number, having a handgun on his person and second-degree escape.

Woods was ordered held without bail by Harford County District Court Judge Mimi Cooper on Tuesday.

Woods is a fugitive who was "standing in the street with a gun," assistant state's attorney Laura Rutkowski told Cooper at Tuesday's bail review.
