Howard County Times, Columbia Flier win second place national honors

The Baltimore Sun Media Group’s Howard County Times and Columbia Flier each earned second place in their circulation category in the Local Media Association’s 2014 Newspaper of the Year contest.

Entries were judged on editorial coverage as well as graphic design, advertising layouts, creativity and innovation.

The Times competed in Class B with non-daily newspapers that have circulations from 10,001 to 22,500. Judges called the Times' news writing "concise and informative," and said the paper had "by far the best use of photography of all papers in this class. Sports coverage is a standout in this publication."

The Flier competed in Class C with non-dailies that have circulations from 22,501 to 37,500. Judges said the Flier had "clear and concise writing with especially nice feature stories. ... Good compelling photos, good use of color."

The Times received second-place honors in 2013 and has received two first place awards in past years from LMA, the organization formerly known as the Suburban Newspapers of America.
