Out of 65-plus contestants, Bellows Spring Elementary student spells his way to top

Saketh Sundar, a student at Bellows Spring Elementary School in Ellicott City, was the last of 65-plus contestants standing at the Howard County Library System's 2016 Spelling Bee held Friday, March 11.

Adarsh Gagedepalli, a student at Trinity School in Ellicott City, was runner up at the contest for fourth through eighth graders from across the county.

Some words that students had to spell to move past rounds three and four were vorlage, gestalt, phenomenon, recalcitrant, saboteur and pentathlon, according to the library system's Twitter feed.

In late May, Saketh will compete for a national title against about 280 spellers from all 50 states at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor.
