In preparation for Halloween trick or treating, Howard County police have checked the Maryland Sex Offender Registry in surrounding communities to ensure all sex offenders are registered and in compliance with its requirements.Police spokeswoman Lori Boone said officers have checked all 84 registered sex offenders in the county, all of whom are compliant. Police frequently visit sex offenders' residences and employment to conduct regular checks. Registered offenders on probation were told they can not participate in trick or treating, police said.More information is available on the registry at www.HCPD.org.Police will be patrolling residential neighborhoods and watching for any signs of vandalism, theft or property destruction over Halloween weekend and on Monday, Oct. 31. Speed enforcement will be underway, Boone said, as officers watch for drunk or impaired drivers. Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to go out before dark or have an adult chaperon carry a flashlight around after dark. While staying on well-lit streets, police said children should wear costumes that are short, snug and flame retardant as well as made of light colors and with reflective tape. Adults should also inform children to never enter a stranger's home or car and wait to eat their candy until it has been inspected by parents. Other tips include avoiding shortcuts through alleys or playing fields; removing objects from the yard that might be a hazard to visitors; and driving slowly all evening. The Howard police Pathway Patrol Section's "Bike with a Cop" will be held during the day on Saturday, Oct. 29, when kids, ages 5 to 12, and parents can bike around the Columbia lakefront with officers. Boone said bike-friendly costumes are welcome. For more information, go to www.HCPD.org.
