Politics behind Calvin Ball's legislative moves [Letter]

It is a sad day when partisan politics precedes thoughtful legislation.

Why did Calvin Ball author his feckless Howard County gun ban bill now? He had eight years during Ken Ulman's reign when he could have proposed such a bill.

Why now? For one reason, because Calvin is setting himself up for a 2018 run as the anti-gun anti-Kittleman candidate. He wanted Allan to veto the bill. However, Allan was too smart, he signed the bill — reluctantly — knowing the council has a veto proof Democrat majority. He took away the satisfaction the council would receive by overriding the county executive.

Once again, Calvin Ball is playing partisan politics with little thought of the community by re-introducing the sugar ban that Allan rescinded his first days in office. Ken Ulman's sugar ban did nothing during its prior implementation and will do nothing again. Just as the gun ban will do nothing — guns were already banned — as lawful carry in Maryland is restricted to but a few. Those few, who are vetted as thoroughly as any law enforcement officer, will now be banned.

Once again, Calvin is attempting to discomfit the executive with no concern for Howard County citizens. The overwhelming majority of citizens eschewed the prior sugar ban, so why did Calvin re-introduce it? Again, just another one of Calvin's petty partisan politicking maneuvers.

Howard County needs more statesmen like Allan Kittleman, not petty Jacobins like Calvin Ball.
