The niche downtown Columbia deli and coffee shop Lakeside Deli & Café is expected to reopen in its new location in 70 Corporate Center this fall.
The deli, which on the ground floor of the American City Building on the downtown lakefront for the previous eight years, closed in December after building operator the Howard Hughes Corp. approached the owners with an offer to move into 70 Corporate Center, down the street,
The plan was to reopen the deli, known as "Lakeside," inside the nine-story office building-- in Columbia's Warfield neighborhood on the corner of Little Patuxent Parkway and Broken Land Parkway -- this spring.
The building, which houses Enterprise Community Partners -- a fellow former American City Building tenant -- and GP Strategies, opened in 1992 and is the former home of the Ryland Group, a national home builder.
Howard Hughes also operates, and owns, 70 Corporate Center.
"Lakeside Café has been missed downtown. Construction is now under way, and we are pleased the café will reopen in October in new quarters in 70 Corporate Center," said Gabriel Chung, a vice president with Howard Hughes, in a statement.
Michael So, owner of Lakeside, said the wait was attributed to a delay in signing a 10-year lease, which he said was finalized last month.
So said the new location will open in September, while Howard Hughes officials are pegging October as the more likely date.
So said he decided to accept the move, in part, because vacancies inside the American City Building were beginning to have ramifications on his business.
Lakeside's departure left the nine-story building with just four tenants: a U.S. post office, the Columbia Archives, the Artists' Gallery -- all on the ground floor -- and a third-floor tenant.
So said he is excited to be back near Enterprise, from which he derives a lot of business.
