International parents new to Howard County sought for leadership program

The Howard County Public School System is accepting applications for its International Parent Leadership Program until Oct. 9.

The program is designed to teach international parents living in the county about the American K-12 educational system and the structure and functions of the school system so that they can become more involved in the schools.

"We have parents in the program who are both very highly educated and completed their postgraduate education here, to parents who haven't finished high school back home," said Program Director Min Kim. "There is a broad range there, but we all learn something from each other, and we all care deeply about the education of our children."

The program was started as a way to get international parents in school leadership positions, and consists of six sessions that cover topics such as the school system's governance structure to its funding sources, to Advanced Placement and Gifted and Talented classes. With improved understanding, parents can get more involved in their children's educations, and become advocates for their communities within the school system.

Parents accepted into the program will meet at various locations from Oct. 15 to Nov. 19 on Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
