Annual 24 Hours of Booty set for weekend start

Volunteer registration is now open for the 7th Annual 24 Hours of Booty Columbia. This year's charity cycling event is scheduled to roll on the Columbia Gateway Business Park loop from 2 p.m. Aug. 23 to 2 p.m. Aug. 24, when participants will be riding and raising funds to help fight cancer.

Approximately 170 volunteers are needed to support this year's Columbia ride in the following areas: packet pick-up, pre-event course preparation and maintenance, course marking/signage, food and beverage, campground management, hospitality, and parking and traffic control. Volunteer shifts are assigned in three- and four-hour increments, and opportunities are available for individuals and groups. All volunteers must register online at (click on the volunteer tab). Western Howard County Fever is holding tryouts for its 18U B-team. The tryout will be Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. at Western Regional Park. Zingos Lacrosse Club will hold open tryouts for the 2014-15 season. This year, the club will have teams for high school graduating years 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 (U15), 2020 (U13), 2021 (U13), 2022/23 (U11) and U9 age groups. Field hockey

Warhawks Club Field Hockey is holding tryouts for its professionally coached, select winter indoor tournament teams on Sept. 14 at GOALS in Catonsville. The club's U14, U16 and U19 teams play in-state and out-of-state national-level tournaments November through February, and practice twice a week at the Meadowbrook Athletic Center or GOALS. Soccer Association of Columbia is now registering players for the fall 2014/spring 2015 Clinic season. The league is open to players ages 4-6. Gender based teams meet for eight weeks each season on Saturday mornings and focus on skills, teamwork and the basics of soccer. Players receive an Under Armour jersey and socks. Go to to register. The SAC Juniors Program is a fun-filled introduction to soccer. SAC offers six one-hour weekday or weekend sessions for ages 3-4 throughout the year in Howard County. The Thunder SC Juventus U15 boys team is looking for committed and hard working players to add to its roster for the 2014-15 season. This is a NCSL Division 1 team located in Columbia. The team practices three times a week and plays two to three tournaments each season in addition to the regular NCSL league play. Western Howard County travel baseball organization forms teams for 8U through 22U. Tryouts have already begun. Here are the remaining dates and times for all age groups:

The 11th Annual Ellicott City Labor Day Running Classic 10K and 5K (formerly the Knights of Columbus 10K Run) is scheduled for Aug. 30 at 8 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Anthony. The annual charity race is presented by the Knights of Columbus St. Louis the King Council #11898 of St. Louis Parish, Clarksville. This event helps support local charities, including the Arc of Howard County and FISH of Howard County, and in the last 10 years, it has raised over $50,000, which was donated to many local charities. More than 350 runners completed both races last year.

Platinum sponsor, Smokin' Hot Bar & Grille of Glenwood will cater the event. They will be providing sausage, chicken and a variety of side dishes for all participants.

In addition to the food, there will be a DJ, random prizes, post-race massages by Howard County Chiropractic Spine & Sports Rehabilitation, snowballs, and a moon bounce for the kids. Cash awards ($75, $50, and $25 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place overall male and female finishers in both races) and non-cash awards will be provided in seven age group categories. The 10K run is USATF certified and is part of the 2014 RacePacket Grand Prix.

Celebration Church's 13U boy's basketball team is looking for dedicated and hard working basketball players for its year-round team.
