Maryland Sting goes undefeated at Hershey Showcase

The Columbia-based Maryland Sting 8th grade AAU girls recently played in the USJN Hershey National Showcase in Harrisburg, PA. The Sting played in the 13U bracket and went undefeated, winning all eight games. The championship game was played against the New Jersey Shore Elite 13U. The Sting were losing for most of the game but came back in the second half to win, 59-51. Katerra Myers was named to the tournament All-Star Team.
The Soccer Association of Columbia U15 Girls United Premier capped a successful season with an undefeated performance at the U.S. Youth Soccer Region 1 Championships held in Barboursville, WV, June 25-29. Leading up to the regional championships, United Premier went undefeated in Atlantic Soccer League play and finished second in the highest division of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region 1 Champions League. The girls' strong Region 1 performance earned them a spot at the regional championships facing the top 16 teams from the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states.
At regionals, along with two 1-1 ties, United Premier posted a convincing 3-0 win over the eventual runner-up, Smithtown (NY) Hotspur. However, based on points, the team did not advance out of the group stage. The team is comprised of goalkeeper Sarah Hauk; defenders Hannah Bergquist, Kelli Dunagan, Kiersten Moore, Julia Schmidt and Leah Simmons; midfielders Camryn Anderson, Brittney Bennett, Samantha Salter, Victoria Tran, Carly Wetzel and Krista Whelan; and forwards Anna Diffendal, Emily Hauk, Caitlin Shepherd, Bethany Stewart and Tessa Walsh.
The team is coached by Greg Wright, Chris Goodman and Kiho Park.
The WHC Renegades 9U won their fourth tournament of the spring season, the MABA Maryland Classic, over Father's Day weekend winning a close game against the Lake Shore Graysox, 7-5. On their way to the final round, the Renegades went 3-1, dropping a one-run game to the Sykesville Storm (4-3) while outscoring the Maryland Warriors, South West York and the Elkridge Hurricanes by a combined score of 24-14.
In the championship, hitting was the key. Ryan Durborow and Andrew Handelman each went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double by Handelman which plated Landon Baker. DJ Stolba blasted a two-run double to deep center field in the top of the fifth, scoring Logan Pusheck and Handelman. Mound duties were handled by Ben Pearcy and Durborow.
