Howard County girls basketball features competitive balance as a new season starts

It's a good time to be a part of the Howard County girls basketball scene. Atholton, Centennial, Howard, Mt. Hebron and River Hill — all of which have won a state title or reached the final four since 2008 — are expected to compete for the top spot this winter, and a number of players appear to be in the hunt for Player of the Year honors.

"Howard County has really become very competitive over the last few years, which is a lot of fun for all of the coaches and players," said Atholton coach Julia Reynold, whose Raiders return arguably more talent than any other team in the league.

Led by senior Chelsea Mitchell, who averaged 11.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and a county-best 3.6 steals per game last season, Atholton is looking to slingshot past its fifth-place league finish last year.

"Chelsea is really fast and great on defense," said Reynold, who will have no trouble putting seasoned players on the court. "We're really fortunate to have nine returners on the team. We have a strong core and great team chemistry to start the season with."

Seniors Kalere Caldwell (7.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and Sage Mayhew (7.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg) give the Raiders a trio of productive returning starters.

That experience will be invaluable later in the season.

Due to planned renovations to its gymnasium, Atholton's last home game will be against Reservoir on Dec. 22. The Raiders will end the regular season with 15 consecutive road games heading into the postseason. But Reynold is confident in her team's ability to overcome adversity, as they showed last winter by advancing to the 3A East regional finals.

"I'm excited about the season and the girls are, too. We just have to stay focused," she said. "I think our starting line-up could be different almost every game based on our opponent."

Ellicott City rivals Centennial, Howard and Mt. Hebron have all been tabbed by local coaches as teams likely to battle the Raiders for the county title during the last month of the season.

Defending champion Howard graduated a dominant player in center Sydney Biniak, but the Lions return one of the league's top guard-center combos in senior Jayda Gilmore and junior Berit Batterton.

"I've learned through the years never to count out Scott Robinson over at Howard," said Wilde Lake coach Bob Cranford, whose team enjoyed a turnaround season last winter, finishing 9-14 after winning only six games in the previous five seasons combined. "The parity this year is going to be unreal."

Centennial, which finished just behind the Lions in a tight county race last season, boasts one of the league's top all-around players in two-time first-team all-county selection Anna Mitchell (12.2 ppg, 9.6 rpg).

"I think that we have the potential to beat any team in Howard County, but I also think any team is capable of beating us on a given night," Centennial coach Bobby Macheel said. "I foresee a lot of close games coming down to the last few possessions."

The last local team to win a state championship, Mt. Hebron (2008), might be the league's most dangerous team.

The Vikings are the only local team to return two all-county selections: senior forward Nia Crump (8.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and senior guard Megan Konig (9.1 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 3.1 apg, 3.5 spg). Crump, a two-time first-team selection, has committed to play lacrosse for West Point next year. Four-year varsity starter Meghan Doherty and six-foot-two junior Gabrielle Green (8.7 ppg), the county's top returning blocker (68), give the Vikings depth to rival any team in the league.

"We have good experience to go along with youth," coach Anthony Bell said. "I expect us to be right there at the top this season. The county will be very balanced this year."

Look for Wilde Lake, led by junior guard Rachel Lazris (16.6 ppg, league-best 7.0 apg), Reservoir and River Hill to also be in the mix.
