Atholton boys golf hits season high in sweep of Glenelg, Howard

Atholton's boys picked a perfect day to put together their best team effort of the year.

Up against a pair of undefeated teams — Glenelg and Howard — at Fairway Hills on Thursday afternoon, the Raiders put all four of their guys above 21 points on their way to 97 points overall and a tri-match sweep. It was the program's highest single-match total since 2009.

"The kids have played in pressure situations in a high school setting earlier this year against Marriotts Ridge, and even though we lost I think that experience — along with playing in tournaments over the summer — definitely helps," Atholton coach Scott Robinson said. "They've worked extremely hard and I think they felt ready for today."

Max Rosenthal led the way for Atholton (7-1) with a career-high 27 points (even par), but he had plenty of help. Chris Robinson was right behind him with 26 points, followed by Josh Lewis (23) and Nick Osterman (21).

Osterman's day was highlighted by a hole-out for eagle on the par 5 fifth hole.

Glenelg (7-1) finished second on the day with 80 points as a team, with Young Lee (25 points) and Steven Segrist (23) pacing the effort. Howard (6-2) was third with 70 points as Greg Cherry and Steven Park each produced 20 points.

"All credit to Atholton for having a phenomenal day. It would have taken our A++ game and I'm not even sure that would have been enough points," Glenelg coach Chris Beil said.

Atholton's only loss this season came against Marriotts Ridge (8-0) on a day where the Mustangs set the county record for points in a match (106). While that loss stung, Atholton's coach Robinson has been pleased with the positive strides his team has been making each week.

The 97 points Thursday were the second highest total by any team this fall.

"The goal is to keep getting better, so this was a great match for the guys in that respect," Robinson said. "We've got three county matches left, then its counties, districts and then states. We want to keep improving every step of the way."
