Horizon Foundation's 2014 awards total nearly $1 million

Horizon Foundation, a public health nonprofit in Howard County, awarded nearly $1 million in grants in 2014, the organization announced.

In all, the foundation awarded $989,987 to 16 organizations serving Howard County and whose work aligns with Horizon's mission to increase access to health care and promote healthy lifestyles, according to a press release.

Some of the bigger awards include:

• $59,263 to the Howard County Chinese School for its Community Health Access Resource Guide, which helps Asian American residents navigate the health care system;

• $150,000 to the Community Action Council of Howard County for its Healthy Families Healthy Children Program, which helps families of toddlers develop healthy habits and manage chronic diseases through a curriculum taught at Howard County Head Start schools;

• $59,263 for the Healthy Play Program, sponsored by Fusion Partnerships and the Ellicott City Soccer Club, which offers education about nutrition on the soccer field;

• $81,250 to Evergreen Health Cooperative to fund a health coach, who will care for approximately 260 patients, at its Columbia location;

• $75,000 to Healthy Howard, Inc., for its Healthy Childcare Program, which works with early childhood programs to help them improve the health and wellness of the children they care for;

• $25,000 to the Korean American Senior Association of Howard County to improve the wellness of Korean Americans in Howard County and increase preventive care awareness; and

• $58,000 to the Howard County Economic Development Authority to support the "Roving Radish," a meal-delivery program that debuted last summer.

Other programs that received grants from the Horizon Foundation last year include the Howard County Mental Health Authority, the American Academy of Pediatricians, the Medical Dental Action Coalition and a Howard County government study on how to enhance opportunities for active transportation for school children.
