Howard police arrest man in July Turf Motel murder

Howard County police have located and arrested a man they were searching for after the homicide of a 29-year-old woman nearly four months ago at the Turf Motel in Laurel.

Kenneth Frizzell Diggs Jr., 47, was arrested Thursday without incident at an acquaintance's home in the 4600 block of Hillside Road in Washington, D.C., police said. He has been charged with a warrant for the murder of Amanda Duer, of La Plata, as well as the attempted murder of Derick Henderson, 33, of Washington, D.C.

Other charges include assault, reckless endangerment, burglary and firearms violations.

Police said Friday that the department's warrant/fugitive section heard of Diggs' location, where he was arrested with the help of the U.S. Marshals and the Metropolitan Police Department. A $10,000 reward was offered by police in September, but officers said no decision has been made whether anyone is eligible for the money.

The search for Diggs began on July 2 after police were called to the Turf Motel where they found Duer and Henderson with gunshot wounds. Police said Duer was taken to Laurel Regional Hospital and pronounced dead, while Henderson was taken to Shock Trauma, treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and later released.

Witnesses told police that Diggs had entered the doorway of the victims' motel room and fired shots at both of them. Police believe Diggs and the victims knew each other and were involved in a dispute.

Diggs is currently in Metropolitan Police custody, Howard police said, and pending extradition to Howard County where he will be served the arrest warrant.
