Howard police identify officer involved in fatal shooting

A Howard County Police officer shot and killed a man outside a Columbia home Friday morning. According to police, the man was armed with a knife and did not heed the officer's order to put it down.

Pfc. Luke Buchanan, an eight-year veteran of the Howard County Police Department, has been placed on official leave after he shot and killed a man police say confronted him with a knife on Friday morning in Columbia.

Police said they received a 911 call about 10:40 a.m. on Oct. 9 regarding a man inside a home in the 6400 block of Cardinal Lane in the Village of Hickory Ridge. According to police, the caller said the man had a knife and was threatening to kill him.

Police later identified the man as Gary Carmona Boitano, 19, of Hyattsville.

When officers arrived, they said they were confronted by Boitano with a knife in the driveway. Police say Buchanan repeatedly told Boitano to drop the knife, but he refused. According to a police news release, the officer "was forced to fire at the man," who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although the Criminal Investigations Bureau and Internal Affairs Division are continuing the investigation, police said there is no indication that anyone other than Boitano was at the residence at the time of the shooting.

Through their investigation, police determined Boitano was temporarily staying at the Cardinal Lane residence where the shooting occurred. Police did not disclose the identity of the property's owner.

Buchanan will remain on leave pending further investigation.
