Two brothers charged in armed robbery of Columbia bank

Two brothers accused of making off with $3,000 from a Columbia bank Saturday were apprehended shortly after the alleged robbery after a foot chase through neighborhoods in East Columbia, Howard County police said Monday.

Calvin Abney, 23, of Jaris Avenue in Oxen Hill, and Richard Abney, 28, of Billings Place in Capitol Heights, both face armed robbery, robbery, multiple counts of assault, theft, reckless endangerment, auto theft and a handgun violation, police said.


The two are brothers, according to the State's Attorney's office spokesman. Both are being held at the Howard County Detention Center on $750,000 bond, police said.

According to the charging documents, police received a silent alarm from PNC Bank located in the 10400 block of Little Patuxent Parkway at 9:51 a.m. on Saturday.


According to the documents, a man wearing a mask and a navy parka style jacket with the hood up entered the bank. An employee allegedly told the man to remove the mask and put the hood down, at which time the man pulled out a handgun, according to the documents.

The man then demanded money and pulled out a white plastic bag, which was used to hold the money, according to the documents. The charging documents state the total amount stolen during the robbery was approximately $3,100.

The man, who was pointing the gun at the tellers during the robbery, then allegedly fired a single round into the ceiling, police said, before entering the passenger side of a gray Toyota Corolla and fleeing, according to the documents.

No one was injured, police said.

Through video surveillance, police were able to identify the Corolla, which was reported stolen on Dec. 26 in Prince George's County, according to the documents.

After the robbery was reported, patrol officers saturated the area, police said. As officers canvassed the area, two suspects matching the description were located in the 6300 block of Stevens Forest Road, according to the documents.

The two men the led police on "a long foot chase," before they were apprehended at 10:20 a.m. in a wooded area behind River Meadows Drive, approximately half a mile from where they were first spotted, according to the charging documents.

A white plastic bag containing cash was found on one of the suspects, according to the documents. Police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn said police are not releasing how much money was recovered from the suspects.


The Corolla and a second stolen vehicle used in the robbery, a Blue Lexus, were recovered by police, according to the documents.
