Howard County police said they collected 862 pounds of unwanted, unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications Saturday as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Take Back Initiative, according to a news release.
Police said they hosted 10 collection sites throughout the county from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 26 where residents anonymously dropped off medications for free disposal with no questions asked.
Police did not inventory the contents, and the collection containers were sealed and given to the DEA for proper disposal, according to police
According to police, the National Take Back Initiative aims to reduce instances of prescription drug poisonings, misuse, abuse and theft. It also provides an environmentally safe disposal method.
