On Oct. 30, 1963, Columbia founder Jim Rouse announced that his company, Howard Research and Development, acquired 14,100 acres of land in Howard County that would eventually become Columbia.
Fifty years later, on Wednesday, the Columbia Archives will open its exhibit called "Creating Columbia: Going Public, Getting Started."
The exhibit is the second in an ongoing series by the Archives that "traces the milestones of Columbia's development," according to a news release from the Columbia Association. The series will continue through June 2017.
A free reception is being held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the Archives located in the American City Building located at 10227 Wincopin Circle.
The exhibit, which includes the original press release that announced the purchase, will run through March 2014 and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
