The fourth-floor deck of a Columbia apartment building caught fire Sunday afternoon, the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services said.

Firefighters and paramedics were called at about 4:20 p.m. to the fire in the 5600 block of Columbia Rd., the department said. A resident had used more than one fire extinguisher trying to put the fire out, the department said.

Howard County fire crews were able to confine the blaze to the outside deck and put it out quickly. No one was injured, and the residents were expected to be able to return to their apartments Sunday. The fire's cause is under investigation, and the amount of damage has not yet been determined.

While the department lauded the resident's efforts to put out the fire, it warned that he risked injury and reminded people to only use fire extinguishers on small, confined fires, such as one in a trash can.
