Howard County police are investigating a single vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Columbia that left one person dead and two others injured.

Police said the crash happened at 4:36 a.m. The preliminary investigation indicates a 2002 Nissan Frontier was heading west on Guilford Road in the area of Stirling Bridge Drive in the southeastern part of Columbia when the car left the roadway and struck a tree, police said.

The driver was transported to the Howard County General Hospital and was pronounced dead. He has been identified as 29-year-old Nicholas Thomas Morrison of the 800 block of Maple Avenue in Gambrills.

Two other people in the car were injured and were transported to Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore in stable condition.

Police said they believe alcohol may be a factor in the crash, and the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

Guilford Road was closed to traffic in the area until about 615 a.m. for investigation and clean-up. The incident is still under investigation.
