Atholton field hockey gets share of Howard County title

After three postponements, Atholton and Long Reach finally got to play their game Monday afternoon. Atholton's 16-0 victory gave the Raiders a 10-1 league record and a share of the Howard County title.

Marriotts Ridge and Glenelg also finished 10-1.

"Kudos to Glenelg and Marriotts Ridge. It's nice to have such competitiveness in the county," Atholton coach Martie Dyer said.

In 1995, the Raiders shared their only other county title in field hockey with Centennial.

Atholton has been a high-scoring team this fall. The Raiders have scored in double digits in five games and have totaled 98 goals during the regular season.

Jen Bleakney (seven goals) and Katie Fales (five) led the team against Long Reach.

Long Reach goalie Alina Milauskas made 24 saves.

"I thought she did a great job," Dyer said.

Tuesday's Reservoir-Centennial make-up game was a position round. Reservoir's 3-1 victory jumped the Gators (5-6) ahead of Centennial (4-7) in the final county standings.

"I am so happy with how they played today. Lots of good things are happening at the end of the season," said Reservoir coach Lindsay Beil.

Reservoir's Sophia Macek scored on a stroke and their keeper, Connie Chung, saved a stroke.

Maggie Sullivan scored for Centennial with an assist from Sarah Arbaugh.

IND 1, Glenelg Country 0 (Thursday, Oct. 16)

After 69 minutes of scoreless field hockey, the Institute of Notre Dame's Gabby Guindon scored with a minute left in sudden-victory overtime to give her team a 1-0 victory over visiting Glenelg Country School Thursday afternoon.

Despite playing on a challenging grass field, Glenelg Country had strong play by goalie Sophia Kalaris, defender Dodo Etokebe, attacker Megan Hooper and midfielder Julia Sheehan.

Glenelg Country ranks eighth in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland's B Conference standings. IND is seventh.

Glenelg Country hosts St. Paul's School for Girls on Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. It is the last game of the regular season. The IAAM playoffs begin Oct. 24.
