Howard County libraries to open some services for appointments in April

Howard County libraries will open for in-person visits by appointment starting April 5 due to the improving coronavirus numbers and an increase in vaccinations in the county.

The Howard County Library System announced Wednesday said it will be opening for 45-minute appointments next month for “limited in-person services,” such as computer access, printing, browsing and self-checkout, according to a system news release.

“Our team is grateful for the patience, support and enthusiasm of our customers,” library system President and CEO Tonya Aikens said in the release. “While return to our branches will not be a return to a pre-pandemic environment, our Phase 4 reopening plan prioritizes access to critical services our customers rely on for academic achievement, access to technology and workforce development.”

More details about how to schedule appointments will be posted on the library system’s website when available.

In addition to appointment openings, the East Columbia Branch will open for passport services May 3.

Capacity at the system’s six branches will be capped at 25%, and social distancing and masking rules will be in place.

“As we have since last March, we will continue to follow guidance from public health experts to prioritize the health and safety of all who walk through our doors,” Aikens said.

Even with the new appointment plan, the library will continue to offer contactless pickup and other services put in place during the pandemic. Meeting rooms, classes, events and book/material donations, however, still will not be available.

Last March, the system closed down due to the coronavirus and adjusted to virtual programming as it dealt with financial constraints and book drop overloads. Then, in late June, it started its contactless pickup program that it has operated since.

The system also permanently removed its overdue fine policy last summer.
