Howard County police are investigating a crash that left one dead and caused all lanes of traffic on I-95 blocked for two hours this afternoon.
Officers were responding to a call around 2:17 p.m. that alleged drug activity in a vehicle in the 9100 block of All Saints Road in Laurel, according to a release from the Howard County Police Department.
When the driver of the suspected vehicle saw officers, he quickly fled from the scene, police said.
What ensued was a chase-of-sorts through the streets of Laurel as officers attempted to stop the car. The driver drove onto northbound ramp of I-95 at Route 216.
Investigators believe the driver tried to make an illegal U-turn onto the southbound lane of I-95 at a “high rate of speed," eventually losing control and being struck by a tractor-trailer, police said.
A Howard County General Hospital helicopter airlifted the suspected driver and the passenger to the shock trauma center. The passenger remains in critical condition. The driver has died as a result of his injuries.
A police spokeswoman declined to release the identities of the drivers, pending notification of family members.
The driver of the tractor trailer was taken to Howard County General Hospital with minor injuries. A third vehicle was run off the road during the incident, police said. The adult female driver was also taken to Howard County General Hospital with minor injuries.
The investigation is ongoing. I-95 southbound remains closed at Route 32 as of 4 p.m. The northbound lane was temporarily closed while a medical helicopter landed to transport the injured people to the hospital.
