Akinci had stopped her car on northbound Phelps Luck Drive to run across the roadway with another teenager to a Royal Farms store, according to police. Akinci was the only one struck, and the vehicle fled the scene.

Akinci was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with serious injuries, where she later died, police said Thursday.
