Howard County police identified Shekhar Mandali, 29, of Ellicott City, as the pedestrian who was killed Thursday on U.S. Route 40 in Ellicott City.
According to a police news release, at about 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, a 2021 Toyota Venza was traveling westbound on U.S Route 40 near Greenway Drive when it struck Mandali, who was not in a crosswalk nor at an intersection when he was struck, police said.
According to The Hindu, a newspaper published in India, Shekhar was 28 years old and worked as an event manager in the hospitality industry. He was from the Theratigudem village of Gurrampode mandal in Nalgonda, according to The Hindu, and came to live in the U.S. in 2018.
A GoFundMe account set up by family and friends to “support (Mandali’s) family and send his body to India,” had garnered about $35,000 from more than 750 donations as of Monday afternoon.
Police said an investigation into the crash is ongoing; no one in the vehicle was injured and no charges have been filed.
