Man rescued from water in Howard County

A 22-year-old man was rescued from the Patapsco River in cardiac arrest Sunday afternoon, according to Howard County fire officials.

Firefighters and swift-water rescue teams from both Howard and Carroll counties responded to a 911 call at 12:30 p.m. for a person who had been swept downstream near Henryton Road in Marriottsville, said Firefighter Adam Nolder, a spokesman for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

Firefighters were directed down a path that leads to the Patapsco River, where they found the man partially submerged in slow-moving water. Firefighters wearing life jackets were able to pull the man from the water and paramedics performed CPR, Nolan said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Howard County General Hospital in Columbia with life-threatening injuries, Nolan said.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident because the water is in Carroll County.
