Piano duo Shadrin and Lu plays for Sundays at Three [Classical music]

Yury Shadrin and Tian Lu have got the keyboard covered for an upcoming Sundays at Three concert. This husband and wife duo will play music written for piano four hands on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m., at Christ Episcopal Church in Columbia.

Besides their joint performances as Shadrin and Lu, they have individual performing careers. Those busy schedules include much activity on the local classical music scene.

As a duo, they were finalists in the 2013 Rising Stars competition that is part of the Howard County Arts Council's annual Celebration of the Arts.

Both are pursuing graduate degrees at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, where they study with Leon Fleisher and Kathy Jacobson Fleisher. Lu leads adult and youth choirs at Christ Episcopal Church.

These local affiliations are thousands of miles away from where they grew up.

Yury Shadrin was born in Russia. In his early teens, he attended a school for gifted children there.

By 1994, he had won both Siberian and International Piano competitions. That sort of recognition led to a European recital tour.

He studied at the Moscow Conservatory for six years, then moved to the United States and studied at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio.

After moving to Yale University, he next moved to the Baltimore area in order to study with Leon Fleisher at the Peabody Institute.

Tian Lu was born in China. She began studying piano at age 4 and went to high school at Shanghai Conservatory. She moved to the U.S. and studied at Oberlin Conservatory.

Lu won the Thailand International Piano Competition and performed with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra for its 2008-2009 season. Also on the international front, she won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Maracaibo, Venezuela.

Her collaborative activities include playing with the Maia String Quartet and Dorian String Quartet.

These well-seasoned young performers will jointly apply their keyboard skills to a Sundays at Three program consisting of Diabelli's Sonatina in G Major; Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Schumann; Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, Op. 72, No. 2 in E; Fauré's "Les pas Espagnol" from "Dolly Suite"; Mozart's Variations in G Major, K. 501; Bizet's 8 pieces from "Jeux d'enfants"; Ravel's "Ma mere l'oye (Mother Goose) Suite"; and Stravinsky's Selections from "Petrushka" Ballet.

The piano duo Shadrin and Lu performs on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m., at Christ Episcopal Church, 6800 Oakland Mills Road in Columbia. Tickets are $15; 17 and under are free when accompanied by a paying adult. Call 443-288-3179 or go to http://www.sundaysatthree.org.
