Man in Santa beard robs Laurel bank

A surveillance camera at the PNC Bank in Laurel captured this image of a man who police say robbed the bank at gunpoint.

A gun-wielding man wearing a "fake Santa beard" robbed a bank in downtown Laurel on Saturday morning, firing at least one shot but injuring no one, according to Laurel Police.

"He walked into the bank and fired off a round" with a handgun, said Pete Piringer, a police spokesman. "He was very quick, didn't have to spend too much time in there."

The man entered the PNC Bank at 390 Main Street just after 9 a.m., and fled the scene shortly after with an undisclosed amount of cash in what appeared to be a maroon sedan, Piringer said.

The bank remained closed as of about 11 a.m. as police investigated the scene, Piringer said.

Images from surveillance footage at the bank show the man in a black jacket and dark winter hat, part of his face hidden behind a grayish fake beard.

The bank had just opened at the time of the robbery, Piringer said, and he did not know how many bank employees or customers were there at the time.

No one was injured.
