A North Laurel man was convicted Thursday of two attempted murder charges in connection with the 2012 shooting of his estranged girlfriend and her friend at at Ellicott City salon, according to State's Attorney spokesman Wayne Kirwan.
Tuan Minh Pham, 36, of the 9300 block of Somersby court, was found guilty of first- and second-degree attempted murder in Howard County Circuit County by a jury after nearly eight hours of deliberation. Pham is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 17 in front of Judge William V. Tucker, where he could receive a maximum penalty of life in prison.
According to police, Pham shot Lan Hoang Mai Phan and Phuong Thanh Do at a nail and hair care spa located at the Shipley's Grant shopping center, located in the 5700 block of Richards Valley Road, on July 14, 2012.
Do sustained four gunshot wounds in a confrontation that took place both inside and outside the nail salon, which was recorded on the salon's video surveillance system, Kirwan said. Phan was shot once in the shoulder inside the salon.
Both victims, who survived, were taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition and were later released.
After the shooting, Pham eluded authorities for eight months by making his way to Virginia before eventually turning himself in to police on March 15.
The jury convicted Pham of attempted first-degree murder of his former girlfriend, Phan, with whom he shares custody of two daughters, according to Kirwan.
Pham also was convicted of attempted second-degree murder of Do, whose brother was in a relationship with Phan at the time of the shooting, Kirwan said.
The jury also returned guilty findings in two counts of use of a handgun in a crime of violence, one count of reckless endangerment, two counts of violating a protective order, which prohibited Pham from contacting Phan, possession of a firearm and one count of illegal possession of a regulated firearm.
