This nearby classical music concert is Sunday at three

The Sundays at Three chamber music series is just a short drive away for Howard County residents, because its concerts are performed at Christ Episcopal Church, in Columbia. This can be as much of an advantage for the performers as for the audience.

"It's nice to be living here," acknowledges clarinetist William Jenken, who is among the performers at the season-opening concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29.

A member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 1998, Jenken moved to Columbia from Baltimore in 1999. Howard County is a convenient place to call home, because the BSO performs at both the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore and the Music Center at Strathmore, in North Bethesda in Montgomery County.

For the upcoming Sundays at Three program, Jenken will be joined by a fellow member of the BSO, violist Peter Minkler, and pianist and Columbia resident Sylvie Beaudoin. The trio will perform Robert Schumann's Marchenerzahlungen "Fairy Tales;" Mozart's "Kegelstatt" Trio in e-flat major; Jean Francaix' Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano; Francis Poulenc's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano; and Ernest Bloch's Five Pieces for Viola and Piano.

Not only is Jenken a regular performer for the Sundays at Three series, but he also formerly served on its board. He says that it is "a very fine series and a fabulous place to play. The acoustics are terrific and (the church is) a bright, airy place. It's an ideal setting for chamber music."

As a full-time musician with the BSO, Jenken says "it is pretty tough" for him to put non-BSO programs on his already busy schedule, but he welcomes opportunities to do the occasional chamber music concert. There are more than 80 musicians in the BSO, but a chamber music concert involves just a few musicians on stage.

"The BSO is my main job, so [Sundays at Three] is more a labor of love," Jenken said. "The chamber concerts can take a huge amount of dedication, but it's a different part of our performing lives that we can't get with the BSO. It's a different kind of playing that is good for our performing and for our souls."

William Jenken, Peter Minkler and Sylvie Beaudoin perform for the Sundays at Three series on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 6800 Oakland Mills Road in Columbia. Tickets are $15; children 17 and under are free when accompanied by a paying adult. Call 443-288-3179 or go to
