The city of Laurel was one of several dozen cities and towns in the state to earn designation as a Maryland Municipal League Banner City/Town at the annual MML convention in Ocean City last month. Laurel is one of seven municipalities that have earned this designation since the program began six years ago.
The involvement of elected and local officials in MML functions is part of the criteria for earning the designation.
In a released statement, Laurel Mayor Craig Moe gave credit to local elected officials and city staff in earning the designation.
"Participation in MML gives us an opportunity to exchange ideas with all cities and towns in Maryland and to discuss and share best practices of municipal government," Moe said in the release.
Laurel City Council member Donna Crary was re-elected as an at-large member to MML's Board of Directors, composed of elected and appointed officials from throughout the state. Board members are elected at the Maryland Municipal League's annual business meeting in June and serve one-year terms.
The mayor's executive assistant, LouAnn Crook, was elected as vice-president of the Maryland Municipal Clerks at this year's meeting.
MML, founded in 1936, is a voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan association controlled and maintained by city and town governments, devoted to the promotion of all branches of municipal administration.
