A Columbia man died five days after his car hit a tree on Little Patuxent Parkway, police said Friday.
James Dennis Ellis Jr., 72, died Thursday at University of Maryland Hospital, police said, from injuries he sustained when his car hit a tree near The Mall in Columbia just before 10 p.m. Saturday.
The roads were wet from the wintry weather and police said Ellis was speeding. Ellis had not been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to officers.
Police said that this is the 10th fatal crash in Howard County in 2011. It is the seventh death where a seat belt was not being used.
