Howard Co. crash sends five to area hospitals

Five people traveling in a Crown Victoria were taken to local hospitals after their car struck a guard rail in Dayton on Friday afternoon, Howard County police said.

The crash occurred at 1:47 p.m. when the driver of the 2002 Ford Crown Victoria, John Henry Burnham III, drove off the right edge of Route 32. The car went airborne, landing next to the road, and caused two people to be thrown.

Burnham, 40, of Fort Meade was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, along with Heather Young, 18, and Brittany Nichole Young, 19, both of Inwood, W. Va., and Brittany Maria Breeden, 17. Heather Young is listed in critical condition, while Brittany Young, Breeden and Burnham suffered less serious injuries.

Frank Burnham, 23, of Baltimore was taken to Howard County General Hospital.

Police said failure to obey traffic signals contributed to the crash.
