Man, 28, dies after being hit by train in Ellicott City

A 28-year-old Ellicott City man died Sunday night after he was hit by a CSX freight train, Howard County police said Monday.

Firefighters found Andrew Wade Pena of the 8500 block Timber Valley Court just before 8 p.m. near Frederick Road and Maryland Avenue in Ellicott City, according to a police spokeswoman. Pena was flown by a state police helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he died.

According to their preliminary investigation, police saw no signs of foul play. Pena was found near tracks that follow the Patapsco River through downtown Ellicott City.

Brian Abraham Shipley, a volunteer firefighter, suffered minor back and neck pain after falling 10 feet during efforts to treat Pena. He was treated at Shock Trauma and released.
