Community celebration
Dedication of the new Robert Oliver Place Road/Arts Walk will be held Sunday, July 11, in the Village of Oakland Mills. A ribbon-cutting ceremony takes place at 12:30 p.m. with County Executive Ken Ulman and County Councilman Calvin Ball. Music by Jared Denhard and Richard McCready and children's activities will take place after the ceremony. The event is free and will be held rain or shine. Information: 410-730-4610.
Singles social group
The Phoenix Cultural Singles Group, a Columbia social group for those 50 and older, meets from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Sundays at the Oakland Mills Interfaith Center, 5885 Robert Oliver Place in the Oakland Mills Village Center. English conversation club
If English is not your first language, practice speaking and understanding it in a group setting at 9:30 a.m. Mondays and 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Howard County Library's East Columbia branch, 6600 Cradlerock Way. Book club
An International Book Club, sponsored by the Columbia Association's International Exchange and Multicultural Programs, meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at the Columbia Art Center, 6100 Foreland Garth. Family support meeting
Group provides support and education to families and friends of adults with a mental illness. The meeting takes place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at Harmony Hall Retirement Center, 6336 Cedar Lane. Information: 410-772-9300.
Chair yoga
The East Columbia 50 Plus Center at the East Columbia branch of the Howard County Library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will offer chair yoga, an easy introduction to yoga that helps ease the pain of arthritis, reduce fatigue and improve circulation and breathing, at 10 a.m. Tuesdays. •A class to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falling, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays. Cost is $24.
•An evening exercise class will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Personal trainer Sharon Cunningham is the instructor.
•A belly dance class will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays. Camila Karam will teach hip movements, stretches, arm and hand techniques, and veil dancing. Cost is $25 a month.
•A yoga class with Camila Karam is offered from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays. The cost is $24 a month.
•Beginners tai chi classes take place 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. The cost is $24 a month.
•Ryan Shimabukuro leads a hula class that helps to tone and strengthen the body from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursdays. Cost for a six-week session is $28.
• A chess club for novice and veteran players meets at 1 p.m. Thursdays. Free.
