Blast at Howard medical offices

Baltimore Sun

A medical office building in Howard County was evacuated Friday afternoon after what fire officials described as an electrical fire and explosion.

The Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services was dispatched to the building in the 11000 block of Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia about 2:05 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of an explosion and flames, said Julia Lynch, a spokeswoman for the Fire Department.

No one was injured, but one patient who was in the middle of a medical procedure was transported to Howard County General Hospital to finish the treatment.

Linda Foy, a spokeswoman for Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., said an underground electric cable near the building failed, but she was not aware of an explosion. Foy said about 27 customers lost service because of the failure, and crews were still working to fix the underground line Friday night.
