A Verizon outage in Ellicott City was affecting 185 phone lines, 23 of them businesses, on Tuesday night, the company said.
The outage was caused when a state contractor was placing new guard rails at U.S. 40 and North Ridge Road for an upcoming Streetscape project, Verizon said. "It appears Miss Utility did not properly mark the area before the contractor began digging," the company said in a release.
The State Highway Administration postponed repair work Tuesday because it would have required closing a lane on Route 40 on an already traffic-heavy snow day, Verizon said.
Verizon will begin repair work at 9 a.m. Wednesday. It did not have an estimated restoral time.
BGE was reporting only 88 power outages across the region as of 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
