Crash on MD 32 in Dayton area sends motorist to Shock Trauma

An Anne Arundel County man was seriously injured after a Saturday morning collision involving a pickup truck and tractor trailer on Route 32 in the Dayton area, Howard County police said.

About 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the driver of a 2014 Freightliner Tractor Trailer was headed southbound at the 4400 block of Route 32 when he partially left the roadway, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to jackknife, police said.

The vehicle then overturned on its side and slid into the northbound lane of Route 32, where it struck a 2008 Ford F-150 pickup truck driving northbound. Then driver and sole occupant of the pickup truck, Vernon Ralph Thompson III, 60, of Shady Side, was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He is listed in serious condition, police said.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Erick Alphonso James, 37, of White Plains was uninjured, police said. Route 32 was closed to traffic between Linden Church and Burntwoods roads until 3:15 p.m., police said. It was reopened after vehicles and cargo were removed, police said.
