An Annapolis man died Saturday when a tree collapsed at a family gathering in Woodbine, authorities said.

Three of his grandchildren, aged 9, 10 and 16, suffered minor injuries in the incident on Daisy Road, the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services said. Two were treated at a local hospital and released.

The 75-year-old man was grilling outside a home on Daisy Road when the tree collapsed, authorities said. Firefighters and paramedics arrived to find him trapped under the tree. He was not breathing and his heart was not beating.

Rescue workers attempted CPR and advanced life support, but were unable to revive the man, authorities said.

Chaplains from the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services and Howard County General Hospital and mental health professionals from the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center were called to support the family.

The cause of the tree collapse is under investigation, authorities said, but it appears to have rotted.

They did not release the man's name.

The tree also damaged four vehicles and the home, which has been declared uninhabitable, authorities said.
